De-Clutter..Your Home and Your Life!

As I was perusing through Facebook this morning over breakfast, I saw 2 interesting articles that seemed to go hand in hand with my weekend plans!

I held an "In-House Sale". I had meant to have a yard sale this summer and it just didn't happen. So...in to my closet and down to the basement I went. Any items I was planning on purging, I then posted in similar groups on my personal Facebook page and my friends could 'buy' them on the spot. Needless to say, it was a success! My house feels lighter already!

These are some of the items I posted. The 3 glass sculptures/tea light holders ($6 for all 3), the chairs ($15 for the pair) and the wall mount tea light holder ($15) are still available ...let me know if you're interested!

When I came across the Style at Home article on 25 Ways to Clear Clutter  and the Huffington Post article on 23 Things Every Woman Should Stop Doing ...a weekend theme was definitely emerging!

I have always been a person to surround myself with things and people I love and I encourage others to do so too! However, sometimes we surround ourselves with a bit too much. Now I'm not saying to remove all things from your life that you love, but I am suggesting you take a step back, re-evaluate and ask yourself, "When did I last use that piece of home decor?" or "My calendar is booked for the next 3 weeks, can I really fit something else in?".

These are some of my  favorite, and what I feel to be most useful, tips from the Style at Home article:
  • Identify problem areas: Take "before" pictures of each room to help identify exactly what needs to be cleared away and which storage solutions might work for each space.
  • Organize your mind: Trying to keep the clutter under control is hard enough for even the most organized individual. Add the extra stress of life-on-the-go and it's easy to lose your mind. Keep a pocket-sized notebook handy and jot down daily to-dos, thoughts and plans. At the end of the day, revisit what you've written and organize appropriately, adding items to a grocery list or activities to a calendar for example.
  •  Baskets: Versatile and sturdy baskets can help you clear clutter on the cheap. Buy a few in the same size and colour to be displayed in multiples.
  • Declutter keepsakes: Artfully organize small mementoes like pictures and cards by creating a pretty wood and glass display box. If you prefer to conceal your keepsakes, an organized file folder with appropriately labeled tabs is a handy place to keep these memories.
  • Donation hamper: Keep a box or bag handy and place gently used items, as you come across them, inside. When it's full, donate it!
  • Multi-task cleaning: Watching TV is usually a relaxing time but who likes to sit through all those annoying commercials? Stay on top of organizing by sorting through drawers during commercial breaks.
  • Neat nightstand: Declare clutter hot spots such as front entryways and nightstands a clutter-free zone. Limit the number of books, magazines and accessories vying for space and attention. If you don't have a nightstand with a drawer, use a basket or tray to keep organized.
  • AND MOST IMPORTANTLY! Be realistic: Know your organizing style. If you're naturally tidy then a lot of hidden, compartmentalized storage and minimal displays will be right for you. If you're more comfortable living in organized chaos then don't be afraid to show off what you've got. Spend time styling what you've organized, getting rid of and moving things around until you're satisfied with how everything looks.

So now that I have the house under control, these are things  I have to get better at saying "no" to or stop doing:
  • Saying “yes” to everyone else*
  • Saying “no” to yourself*
  • Body-snarking -- out loud or in your own head
  • Feeling like an impostor when you accomplish something professionally
  • Holding on to regrets and guilt*
  • Being in relationships for the sake of having a relationship
  • Not taking advantage of your vacation days*
  • Spending time with people out of obligation
  • Being embarrassed about your interests
Yes....I even *starred* some as things to REALLY focus on!!

So....start tonight, start tomorrow morning....I have checked off a few things already just by holding my "In House Sale" this weekend (and it will continue this week too). I also said "Yes" to myself this weekend and did some things just for me that I really wanted to do...

My Mom and I went to the Fall Home Show in Toronto...there were some great booths and vendors. I stopped by the Etsy booth to see all the amazing wares of fellow Canadian Etsy sellers.

We also went to the Annie Sloan booth to check out her amazing chalk paint! Can't wait to do another painting project!

I also had the chance to have some fun and do my DIY fabric project sponsored by Tonic Living from their booth at BlogPodium. Fingers crossed I win! :)

In process.....

The finished product!!

I even had some time to snuggle into bed with my computer, a nice cup of tea and work on some design guides and this blog!

So I've already started de-cluttering both my home and my life. It isn't easy, but it is so worth it...even with the few things I've done so far I feel a difference!

When are you going to start??

Sunny...

I was flipping through the thesaurus, looking for synonyms for the word "Happy"...

Words like 'contented', 'joyous', 'blissful', 'sparkling', 'jubilant', 'delighted' and 'elated' jumped off the page.

The word 'sunny' was also on the list and I felt that it really is the perfect word to use in place of 'happy'....

Sunny = Happy

As I think of things that bring me happiness, sunshine filled days are very close to the top of the list.....

When one feels happy, you exude your own sunshine.

What brings sunshine or happiness to your life??

...

For me....it's the little things....that fleeting moment...that natural element...anything that brings "that" smile or grin to my face and adds that sunshine to my day...

A sunrise through the trees...

Moments of inspiration....

Nature's beauty...

Sunsets at the lake....

..and more sunsets..

Quiet moments with this guy...

Candlelight and nights spent under the stars wrapped up in blankets..

Evenings spent with friends over a good bottle of wine...

Living in a part of the world where we can enjoy all 4 seasons....

Memories of dancing at Camp...

Sand between my toes....

Mountain air and views....

Quiet time at the lake...

Remember to....

Wishing you sunshine and happiness always...

I'm taking some time today to reflect and be truly thankful for the life I have...the life I lead....and the life I have ahead of me.....

The Little Things...

I've been looking through my photos from the past few weeks and realized, the moments I have photographed...the moments that make me smile....are those little moments...everyday life...
They are those moments that make me happy and that make up what I am lucky enough to call my life.

Watching the world go by....

Mother Nature can be fierce...

A furry friend enjoying breakfast....

A collection of namesake jars.....

Sunrise.....

A Saturday morning at the market....

Homemade mac and cheese.....

Flowers....

...flowers...

..and more flowers....

Letting the sun shine in......

Live my life and be happy....The most important thing!

Hope you're having a great week!

Re-focus...

I love my career and give it my all. Sometimes however, I put too much of myself into it and forget to focus on other things...

I love this quote to help me re-focus:

For those of us that are lucky enough to do what we love for a living....I think we can tend to lose ourselves in our career and begin to lose that passion if we aren't good to ourselves.

Join me this year in re-focusing our efforts to ensure balance between our career, our passions and the rest of our lives! Continue to keep reminding ourselves, we work to live, we do not live to work!

What are some of your strategies to ensure you are successful in keeping balance in your life? One of my strategies is to resolve to leave the laptop at work more often...keep work at the office. Balance is a huge key to success...it keeps you fresh and encourages you to keep growing & learning.

I wish you only success this year in your career of choice and that you too have the chance to live and work within your passions every single day!

Take a few moments...

When it rains...it monsoons!....My Aunt and I coined this phrase with everything going on in our lives lately....These past few years have 'tested'my family and other families around me beyond what I could ever imagine and have also made me ask..."Why do so many bad...horrible things happen to good...very good people?!"

We will persevere...we have persevered...and most importantly, we will continue to live our lives and make every single second count!

My Instagram page captures my life's moments...and believe me, I am living every moment! Here's a snapshot....

A New Day = A Gift

Some quiet time to look through House and Home magazine and fell in love with this Woodland Retreat!

I was also sharing my quiet time with this guy on the couch beside me...

"Be daring!"

The first snowfall....Charlie LOVED it!

Branches dusted with fresh snow.....

Saw this brooch wreath inspiration on Pinterest and there is also one on the cover of Chatelaine this month...and....

....with all of these baubles of my Great Aunt's, I will make my own! A great way to display sentimental jewellery this holiday season or even all year round!

Sunset...it had been a gorgeous, sunny Fall day....a perfect ending....

Take a few moments......go for a walk in the snow, curl up on the couch with a good book/magazine, surround yourself with things that inspire you and that you love....and most importantly...be daring and enjoy the gift you are given every day!

Busy, Busy, Busy...

The past few weeks have been super busy.....at times it just feels like there are not enough hours in the day!

Time is flying by, but I am making sure to live every minute....every moment....

These pictures are just a few of the moments of my life over the past few weeks...

Sunset at Emma's Backporch in Burlington on Lake Ontario....Retirement party for my amazing boss....We're really going to miss him and I will be forever grateful to him for everything he taught me, the opportunities he afforded me...and for him just being the truly wonderful person he is!

Charlie and my Dad...having a a very in depth conversation....note the crossed paws :)

I was looking through old pictures of Charlie...those big brown eyes....that pouty lower lip....he had my heart since the first time I laid eyes on him!

Sunset on my flight into Thunder Bay...

Clouds.......flying at sunset is my favorite time of day...

 Looks like cotton balls....

My outdoor holiday decor....ready and waiting to be displayed....The leaves have been raked, outdoor furniture has been put away, the gardens have been tended to....bring on Winter!

A cozy corner in my home.....this was taken as I was lounging on the couch, glass of wine in hand just enjoying being home and enjoying the coziness of Fall...

Candlelight makes everything better! Romantic, warm, cozy....perfect ambiance...

As I look back on the past few weeks...past few months in fact...this statement couldn't be more true but it also reminds me to not waste a second and really get out there and live!

Life is too short...

The world lost an amazing man this week......an old friend who could make you smile in any situation, who knew just when you needed that hug, someone that you could laugh out loud with....an always generous soul who drew people to him with his charisma and his always positive outlook on life!

His life was cut much too short...he had so much more to live for...but...one thing I can say about Adam...he lived every second that he had and he sure loved life!

As I look through pictures from the good ol'days, I think back to how at that point in our lives we felt that we have the world at our feet...that anything and everything was possible.......This week reminded me to always continue to think that way...life is all about perspective, how you approach it and how you throw yourself into it and live every single moment.

Adam....thank you for your friendship....thank you for what you brought not only to my life but to lives of many, many others....
The thought of your smile will always bring a smile to my face...
Your kindness will never ever be forgotten....you..will never be forgotten...

Note to self and everyone ever: You know all of those things you’ve always wanted to do? You should go do them. Because life is NOW. We spend virtually our entire lives “planning for the future” and setting things up for what’s ahead. We are programmed to think about what’s to come instead of what is right now. Now is the only reality. The past is gone and the future hasn’t happened yet. So, 1. Don’t worry. Worrying is like praying for something you don’t want in the future which isn’t even reality yet. 2. If there is something on your heart and it just won’t leave you and it’s a good thing, just do it already! The potential for you igniting greatness in your life and so many others is worth the risk! The alternative is to do nothing and that does… well… nothing. When you do the good things on your heart - no matter how hard they are - life happens! You find joy and the world opens up! You feel light and free and more doors open. So, don’t wait until the timing is perfect or until that magical day you have no fear. That’s not going to happen. The time is now. Goodness is waiting for you right. this. second. Go and do.

Sunrise....

....it was an eerily beautiful, foggy morning on my way to work today.
It was one of those drives, ....watching the sun come up through the trees, the cool crisp air, the music playing and coffee in hand...that you can't help but reflect on things....on life....

I have been very lucky in life....but I have also worked very hard for who and what I am today.

A drive like this morning's... winding down the hills of the escarpment, seeing horses being let out to pasture, the trees starting to turn....gave me a few moments to think about where I am in my life and that I am very fortunate, but also, what I need to continue to do to keep growing as a person and what I need to do to 'be a better me'.

every day.

Just some things to think about....

I find taking the time, ...even just a few minutes....., to re-focus and truly reflect on yourself, where you are now and where you want to go...can be the most valuable minutes of the day!

Some of my favorite ladies!

Some of these gals I know personally....and some I know via their Blogs, Instagram, Facebook etc...But... from our interactions and discussions, I feel like I know them personally and they are my long lost internet soulmates!

Steph is a good friend of mine from London. We're both Kinesiologists and work in the Rehab/Disability Management field full time, but we also have our 'part time' passions. Steph makes gorgeous cards, invitations and other paper products via her Etsy shop, A Paper Buffet. She has also recently opened a second Etsy store called, Knitley Road, where she offers her amazing felted wool and knitted products (I have the iPhone cozy and LOVE it!). Steph is also a very talented photographer and my avatar on Insta, Twitter and FB is a pic she took of me a few summers ago :)

Lovely and Chic
When I moved into my new home just over a year ago, not only was I lucky enough to find a house I love but I also soon found out what a wonderful neighbourhood I had become a part of and Michele and her hubby are the best neighbours/friends a gal could ever ask for! Michele owns an incredible boutique in downtown Guelph called Blush and has a very loyal and devoted following of fashion conscious and stylish patrons! Everytime I walk into her shop, or even pull into my driveway (she has a shop-on-wheels called BOW that is every gals dream of a shoping experience!)...Michele's fantastic sense of style and grace are ever present!

Design the Life You Want to Live
I would have to say that Lynne is my long lost internet soulmate! She and I have never met (we will someday soon), but her sense of humour, her outlook on life and her supportive nature remind me a lot of myself.....as well as our like/love of G&Ts!
The other interesting tidbit about Lynne is that she lives about 45 minutes from my parents on an absolutely spectacular piece of property with a gorgeous home/pool and very, very cool treehouse! Her wonderful home and grounds were recently published in "Our Homes" magazine...definitely have a look!

Heritage Row Reno
A&J are renovating a 1890s row house in St. John's and her pictures/blog make me want to pick up and move out there...or at least find a vacation getaway like theirs anyways! We have never met, but she won my 'Backyard Contest' this summer and through our interactions, her photos, her blog etc, I think that if we lived down the street from eachother, we'd be fast friends! We have a similar style, enjoy the same things like escaping to the water (in her case, she gets to go to the ocean to her cottage), the outdoors, DIYing....and...they have a Choc Lab!!!

Here are a few more ladies and their Blog's that I read/follow and offer me never ending inspiration:

Sashay - Meredith Heron
Made By Girl - Jen Ramos

Thanks again to these ladies for being part of my life in their own unique ways!
